Hopefuls skate through tryouts - Richard Reeder (Cody Enterprise, 8/11/2008)
After three days and multiple games, the Yellowstone Quake are almost ready to announce its 2008-09 team. Coach Marty Quarters has a good idea about who will make the squad, but has some things to iron out before announcing the roster. “When I walk out of the building Sunday night, we`ll be 99 percent set,” he said. “But you don`t want to overcommit to a kid and then have to go back on it. “Plus you offer the tenders and they have to decide what they will do,” he added. “And you always want to sleep on things before making a final decision.” The Quake had 60 players in the three-day camp. After Saturday night`s game, the number was cut to 40 for Sunday`s final all-star game. “I invited all the returning players from last year,” Quarters said. “I wanted to give them one last chance to make it. “I`m pretty sure about the core of the team,” he added. “And I`m really excited about that.” Sunday`s all-star game was high-scoring and featured a brief fight between goalies. “It will change when we report to camp because we`ll be playing both sides of the puck harder,” Quarters said. “The forwards are really talented and will help with the defense. “I believe the best way to play good offense is to play smart defense,” he added. “Tryouts turn out this way because guys aren`t checking as hard and they`re all trying to showcase their talent.” Quarters said the defense is questionable, but had some bright spots. “Matt Prigge and John Watkins played really well,” he said. “And Chris Furness was a real surprise. “Mike Martin played well in goal and will be an outstanding addition,” he added. “We`re unsure of the second goalie, but we may look around at what`s available when other teams cut down.” Returners Mitch Nelson and Kyle Riley were in the running for spots. “Mitch played well and would be a great player to have,” Quarters said. “And Kyle Riley looked good, but he has some other options available and we`re not sure what he`ll do. “Some other guys are on the bubble and we`ll have to see how things play out,” he added. The Quake only had a brief look at first-round draft pick Jacob Doty. He dislocated his thumb Friday morning and will miss eight weeks. “We pretty much know what he can do,” Quarters said. “Any time we can go in and get one of the best players from Billings, that says so much about where we are heading.” One player the Quake took a good look at is center Dajon Mingo, a sharp-shooting center from Detroit. “Coach found me at a restaurant and invited me to tryouts,” Mingo said. “I`m excited to be here. I haven`t attended many tryouts. “This is a small community and will take some getting used to,” he added. “But it looks like a great place and I like it so far. Mingo plans to attend Northwest College. “I want to be a CNA,” he said. “It sounds like NWC has a good program.” Mingo said his family works for Northwest Airlines and can fly free to visit and watch him play. Another family that made the trip from Michigan was Gloria and Terry Royston. Their son Josh is an 18-year-old forward. “Coach contacted us and invited us to come, so we drove here,” Gloria said. “Josh has been playing in the Detroit area for about 10 years. “He just graduated and isn`t going to college yet,” she added. “Things have been rough for our family, so it`s been good for him to have this chance.” Terry was injured and is confined to a wheelchair now. “My situation has strained our finances,” Terry said. “Josh will go to college - just not as soon as we wanted. “He wants to go to Michigan State because we live close to there in Mason,” he added. “We`ll see how that goes.” The Roystons have been impressed with Cody and planned to stay this week to see more of the area. “We love it so far,” Gloria said. “It`s a beautiful community with some great scenery. “It`s a good atmosphere and we aren`t concerned about letting Josh be here,” she added. Terry said the family is going sight-seeing. “We want to get up and see Yellowstone,” he said. “And we`ll probably visit the Buffalo Bill Historical Center.” Players will return Aug. 25 to begin practice.
